Being a councillor is not a very onerous or difficult task. It is not high politics (politics is very rarely discussed), it is a group of motivated local people meeting to support the Dunadd community.

As meetings are held only every two months (currently on the 3rd Thursday of the 2nd month), the time requirement can be as little as 90 minutes per month. Meetings are quite relaxed and informal. Yes, there is an agenda, and minutes are taken as required, but these simply provide a useful framework for shaping discussions.

The community council provides a councillor to sit on the Nadara A’Chruach Wind Farm Community Fund. Thus, providing vital local representation on the panel which decides how this funding is spent. The council also decides how to allocate this funding through micro-grants. Many local individuals and groups have benefitted from this, and without the council, it is unclear how this would continue.

Community councils are the “grass-roots” tier of statutory representation in Scotland. We bridge the gap between Argyll and Bute Council and the local communities, helping to make sure the council is aware of the opinions and needs of the communities we live in. Community Councils are vital and make a difference. For example the DCC has:

Had horse riding signs placed on the C38 to try and slow traffic down

Received a commitment from A&BC to fell dangerous trees in Kilmartin

Had the road markings reinstalled in Kilmartin Village

Received a commitment to extend the 30mph speed limit signs north of Kilmartin village past the existing housing.

A Call to Action!

If you feel that you can spare 90 minutes a month, you would like to ensure that Dunadd communities continue to receive vital funding and continue to develop, and you have ideas, energy, and dynamism or experience then please consider completing a nomination pack available by following the link below by June 25th.

Councillors will be attending Ford Village Gala day on Saturday, June 20th, and will be available in the Hall to chat about the role of community councillors and why they do it and help you complete the nomination form.

Youth Community Councillor

DCC is specifically looking to establish a youth community councillor who will focus on sharing the views of the area’s young people and ensure that they have a voice in how funding is allocated.

The role is open to any Dunadd resident aged 16-21.

If you would like more information on becoming the Youth CC, please email: secretary@dunaddcc.org
